The turning of a new year is traditionally a time for renewal and refocusing. As a compulsive list maker, I am jumping into the new year feeling great because of my new Task Management app called, Wunderlist (WL). I was introduced to the concept of Task Management Apps in the Organize Your Art Biz class offered by artbizcoach.com. Before WL, I would make ToDo lists on random scraps of paper that would clutter my studio desk. I tried to resolve this mess by creating a cork board system to keep them in a central location, but this was still very limiting and not visually pleasing. At first, I tried Toodledo and Todoist. All of the apps had free account options and somewhat similar features, but WL won me over with a super easy interface and because the app is darn pretty! For the background there are the traditional color gradients and peaceful images of sleeping animals, but the teal monster holding an orange balloon totally won me over.
So as an artist, the visuals are important, but if the app doesn't actually work or motivate you to use it, it is just another distraction from the studio. I love that there is a version for both my computer desktop and iPad which automatically sync, so no matter where I am I can add or edit tasks. Starting with a category, like Artwork, Website or Social Media, I can create tasks as a one-time event, weekly or monthly routine, complete with reminders on those dates. Those tasks can be further broken down into subtasks or add notes with websites or random thoughts. Once a task is completed, just check the box and it moves from ToDo to a new section that you can reference when you need to feel good about your progress. You can also use the app with a multi-user team. So far, I am still using the free version and I adore it! I feel more organized, professional and focused, so I can get back to painting without the nagging thought that I am forgetting something!
